Hide and Go Seek

It was a dear, dear, dear old lady—

And a boy who was half-past three–

And the way that they played together

Was beautiful to see.

She couldn’t go running and jumping

And the boy, no more could he—

For he was a thin little fellow

With a thin little twisted knee.

They sat in the yellow sunlight,

Out under the maple-tree—

And the game that they played I’ll tell you,

Just as ’twas told to me.

It was Hide-and-go-Seek they were playing,

Though you’d never have known it to be—

With a dear, dear, dear old lady

And a boy with a twisted knee.

The boy would bend his face down—

On his one little sound right knee—

And he’d guess where she was hiding,

In guesses, One-Two-Three!

“You are in the china closet!”

He would cry and laugh with glee—

It wasn’t the china closet,

But he still had Two and Three!

“You are up in Papa’s big bedroom,

In the chest with the old brass key!”

And she said, “You are warm and warmer,

But you’re not quite right,” said she.

“It can’t be the little cupboard

Where Mama Keeps things for tea—

So it must be the front porch, Grandma,”

And He found her with his Three.

Then she covered her face with her fingers,

That were wrinkled and white and wee,

And she guessed where he was hiding,

With a One and a Two and Three.

And they never had stirred from their places

Right under the maple-tree

This dear, dear, dear old lady–

And the boy with the lame little knee.

This dear, dear, dear old lady

And the boy who was half-past three.

Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Little Sweepers

I always see this question: “Where can I get a broom the right size for children to handle?”

I found this one at Home Depot. It’s called a lobby broom, and just the right size for little ones. The dust pan is also much easier for young children to use.

Toasty Nut Granola

This is a family recipe. I have altered it so that I can make more at once. I stopped buying cereal a few years back when our family ate the whole box in one breakfast. Homemade granola is a more affordable alternative. I love to mix it with oatmeal or sprinkle on top of yogurt.

Ingredients:

12 c. rolled oats                    1/2 c. sesame seeds

1 c. brown sugar                   2 c. chopped nuts

1/2 c. wheat germ                1 c. veg. oil

1 c. wheat germ                     2/3 c. honey

raisins                                     3 tsp. vanilla

Use 2 ungreased casserole dishes around 9 x 13 or around that dimension. Put 6 c. rolled oats  in each dish and toast in the oven at 350 degrees. In a large bowl mix oats and all ingredients except oil, honey, vanilla and raisins. Heat oil, honey, and vanilla in sauce pan until the honey is melted. Pour over oatmeal mixture and stir in. Pour granola into pans and toast in the oven stirring every 10 minutes until golden. Stir every so often when cooling. Add raisins or dried fruit. Store in the refrigerator if you will not eat it up in a week or two.

Fantabulous Coloring Books

My kids like to color while I read to them from books with no pictures. Since they do tend to use up a good number of coloring books, I like them to be a little more advanced than puppies, kittens and horses. If you haven’t seen coloring books like this before just take a look. Here are a few I had laying around the house.

Color by number.

Coloring books to aid memory verses.

In German.

A coloring book about India.

I order from Rod and Staff books. But most mennanite curriculum carriers would have them.
