More Goings On

I’m currently on a canning stint, trying to get thing ready for winter. I didn’t plan on doing much canning as my garden was not very active this last season. However, what I didn’t produce myself, my dear friends have made up for.

This week I put up: 14 pints of salsa, 4 quarts of corn, 7 quarts of applesauce, and 6 pints of grape juice.

Goings On

Put up 7 pints of apple butter. And picked up 11 new hens. 2 banties and the rest are first year pullets. They were gifted to me by someone who is moving to Florida. I’m keeping them locked up for now.

Some Harvest Pictures

My garden was small and I didn’t do a whole lot this year. Mostly I just grew weeds. But we did enjoy the fresh food we grew.

Birds ate almost all of my pea, bean and carrot seed after planting.

At one point I weed-whacked half the weeds and tilled them in, before they went to seed. Unfortunately I still ended up with a lot of weeds going to seed.

I am trying a winter cover crop this year. More on that to come.

“Mushroom Adventures”

I ordered this Portabella Mushroom kit back in January off of amazon.

This is a picture of my first crop of mushrooms.

Just like the box says: “fun and exciting”

Pumpkins in December

Our pumpkins have just gotten ripe.

It’s never too late to carve pumpkins.

Sweet Corn

The boy asked if he could pick some corn.

And I should have known better than to only say yes…

Fortunately, hubby was away.

And I didn’t really feel like cooking dinner anyway.

The corn was at its best, sweet like candy.

The Spoils

CUCUMBER SALAD

Chugging Along

We have been back to school for 3 weeks now. And we are expecting a baby in April. I have been doing a lot less. And doing everything much slower. One of the things near the bottom of the list is posting blogs. So I am not posting as much in case you wondered.

Last night the temperature got down to 34. My cucurbits are all dead. Temperatures are expected to be only down in the 40′s the rest of the week. I may wait and see what happens before I pick all my green pumpkins. Normally I pay better attention, but morning sickness lends one to care a lot less about the garden.

I’m hoping my peaches have time to ripen all the way. They are just starting to blush.

The children set out the potatoes to cure.

Bye bye Golden Sex-Links.

They were my first batch of layers 2 yrs ago.

I sold them yesterday and they went very quickly.

Tomatoes

The long awaited first red tomatoes have arrived! They don’t go very far when they are cherries.

My husband finished a shelf he’s been working on for all our school books.

It’s beautiful! Solid oak.

A Couple Pictures from the Garden

This is my pumpkin patch. I haven’t felt adventurous enough to poke around and see all that is in there. I may wait for a light frost to find out. I did plant a few winter squash in front, but I think they may have gotten smothered in the pumpkins. I had to plant buttercup twice since my seed was so old. I hope I get at least a few buttercup for the winter.

Sweet Corn. I think it has another week or two to go. On the right is my Mammoth Sunflowers. They are about to blossom. If you look closely you can see a dragonfly zooming by above the corn. My yard and gardens are covered in dragonflies. I have never seen so many!
