Another phonics post 😆 BUT I am just looking for reviews! I have a 5 year old who could use some additional support with letters/sounds/understanding reading. Has the phase one set been helpful with this? Or maybe she needs a different phase? I‘d love to hear experiences!

Go with phase 2, phase one teaches the kids to listen and form sounds and patterns

If he is struggling with understanding I highly suggest going back to Phonics 1. My daughter hit a brick wall at 4/5 with reading. She was a letter expert by 2, all the sounds and even copying, but she could NOT put sounds together.

We got Phonics 1 and found out that she was unable to keep rhythm. We later discovered something called "beat deaf'. It's why it was nearly impossible for her to read. She had no natural cadence and struggled with rhymes.

We worked hard for a couple months on helping her not be so beat-deaf, and she's much better. (though still cannot hold a rhythm). However, as soon as we began intensely working on rhythm and rhyme her reading ability exploded.

She went from a lexile score of 18 to 180 in the month in a half since we helped her and she was able to fully complete the Phonics 1 cards.

I am now 100% convinced that kids struggling to read have missed a vital first step in pre-reading.

Phase one is some fun sound games. Phase two gets into decoding words. If your 5yo is the brainy sort, they may also appreciate the recent podcast episode from Brains On on how we learn to read. It explains decoding words. My newly 5yo was completely fascinated by it.
