The app is an optional extra. It will work without a phone (or wifi) entirely provided the cards are downloaded to the yoto and the cards are used to operate it

If you've bought from yoto they'll be in your app library anyway and you don't need to unpackage. If you bought elsewhere you can NFC on your phone into the app

Personally I'd buy the set and sell the duplicate.

We carry lock and lock food containers, one for the minis (we have two), one for headphones, one for cards. Means easy to pack into backpacks and waterproof.
